Liposuction

The term itself refers to the removal of the excess fat deposits on various parts of the body such as the abomen, flanks, buttocks, thighs and hips. There is use of a tool known as the cannula.

Cannula

This is an instrument with a suction pump on one end and which is used to suck out the fat from the body. It is a steel –made tube which is hollow from inside.

Aesthesia

This is a kind of drug administered by an anaesthesiologist so that you lose loss of feeing during the liposuction operation. It is performed before the operation, whereby the aetiologist may either administer local or general anaesthesia depending on the nature of the cosmetic procedure.

Sedative

This is a drug that the surgeon may administer to you so as to induce sleep during the operation so that you do not feel pain.

Risks

The surgeon will mention to you about the possible side effects of the liposuction procedure. Examples of the risks include bleeding, infections, and breathing problems and so on. Liposuction comes with its own inherent risks, most of which should be explained to you before operation.

Pre-operation

This refers to all the prior things that you are supposed to do before the operation. This includes all the preparations that you are supposed to make before the actual operation. Examples of pr-operatives include quitting smokig; stopping taking some medications, exercise and so on.

Post-operation

This term is used to refer to all the things that you are supposed to do as part of the instruction by the surgeon in order to facilitate healing. They are the equivalent of the after-care on the wounds you get after the liposuction procedure.

Tumescent

This term is used to describe a type of liposuction whereby a tube is used on the part where liposuction is to be done. In this type of liposuction, a chemical known as epinephrine is used before carrying out the liposuction procedure. You will notice that in this procedure, local anesthesia is not necessarily used as lidocaine and epinephrine suffice.

Ultra-sound assisted liposuction

This is a type of liposuction where sound is used to cause the fat to melt.i.e ultrasound. The melted fat is then sucked out of the body. It is popular for removing fat in some particular parts of the body namely the upper parts, back and abdomen.

Laser assisted liposuction

Yet another liposuction type, it uses energy from waves, albeit in low levels, to melt fat deposits for easier removal from the body. An instrument known as the cannula is then used to remove the melted fat.

Water-assisted liposuction

This is a technique whereby a beam of water in a shape of a fan is directed at the fatty deposits before removing the melted fat from the body using a cannula.
