Common questions about liposuction

Am I a suitable candidate for Liposuction?

Liposuction is a very effective cosmetic procedure to help alter and enhance your body proportions. In order to realize the best results, it is very important to have a clear outline of your overall goals and expectations and have a highly skilled plastic surgeon with years of experience perform the procedure. If you feel that you may be a good candidate for liposuction because you have localised fat deposits that you would like to have removed, we would advise you schedule a consultation with our leading cosmetic surgeon Dr Barnouti to learn the type of results you can expect to achieve with liposuction for you personally.

What will happen during my liposuction consultation?

Dr Barnouti will first go through your complete medical history, discuss what you would like to achieve with liposuction including the areas you would like to have worked on. He can then determine what would be the most suitable for you such as non-surgical ‘soft’ treatments, which include ultra-shape mesotherapy also known as liposoft or if you require conventional but minimally invasive lipo to remove and reshape those problem areas.

What happens during the liposuction procedure?

Lipo does not take long to perform and can take anywhere for 30 minutes to 3 hours which depends on the amount of areas being worked on.

The first thing that happens in the liposuction procedure is the fat to be removed is liquefied by a number of injections consisting of a saline solution combined with a local anesthetic and a vasoconstrictor that has the function of restricting local blood flow.

At this stage the surgeon will make a very small incision and introduce what is known as a cannula and direct it into the fatty deposits that were chosen to be removed. The surgeon moves the cannula through the fat layer via a back and forward motion which breaks up the fat cells which are also being suck out with a vacuum pump.

What type of care will I need after the liposuction procedure?

The majority of our liposuction patients can go home after the procedure but surgery that involves a larger amount of areas being worked on will require general anesthesia and a required overnight stay in hospital.

After any liposuction procedure a special garment must be worn for an average of 3 weeks post-surgery. For most people, liposuction wounds heal in a short time being around three or four days. We use re-absorbable stitches which means you  do not have to come back to have your stitches taken out. It is common to experience a little bruising and usually takes up to ten days to clear up.

How soon before I am able to go back to work and resume normal activities after liposuction?

We advise a minimum recovery time of 24 hours of proper rest after your liposuction procedure and generally most people can go back to work and resume their normal lives after three to four days.
